WHEELING, W.Va. (AP) — Federal prosecutors in northern West Virginia have at least eight active public corruption cases under investigation and may be announcing prosecutions soon.

U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld’s office launched a Public Corruption Hotline in April and has gotten about 200 tips.

Ihlenfeld calls the respone overwhelming.

He tells WTOV-TV that most have involved corruption by public or appointed officials.

He says announcements about some of those cases could come in October in November, while others may not be prosecuted until next year.

The team is supported by State Police, the FBI and the Internal Revenue Service, as well as the Secretary of State’s Office, the West Virginia Ethics Commission and the state Commission on Special Investigations.

The hotline number is 1-855-WVA-FEDS. Tips can also be emailed to wvafeds@usdoj.gov.

FAIRMONT, W.Va. (AP) — It’s been nearly 14 years since Virginia Tech graduate student Robert Leroy Kovack vanished, and his family in north-central West Virginia is still waiting for answers.

The 24-year-old from Rivesville disappeared Sept. 18, 1998. His red Geo Tracker was found out of gas five days later, parked and locked near the New River Gorge bridge.

Kovack is believed to have been headed for a WVU-Maryland football game in Morgantown, but his backpack, shaving kit and tooth brush were back home in his apartment.

And there’s been no sign of him since.

Now older brother Michael is once again seeking answers.

He tells The Times West Virginian it takes just one person to break the case open and give the family some closure.

He hopes someone will finally come forward.

‎8/21/2012: Pennsylvania: Blaine R. Handerhan, a FORMER Mount Carmel Borough POLICE OFFICER, was sentenced in federal court today before Senior United States District Court Judge William W. Caldwell for possession of CHILD PORNOGRAPHY total
ing ▬►147,070 images and ▬►1,252 video files.

Judge Caldwell sentenced Handerhan to a eight year term of imprisonment and ordered that he pay $75,000 in restitution.

Handerhan was taken into custody following the sentencing to begin serving his prison sentence.

According to United States Attorney Peter J. Smith, Blaine R. Handerhan, age 56, of East Pennsboro, Pennsylvania, was indicted in October 2010 and pleaded guilty in October 2011.

The charges against Handerhan stem from an investigation into the distribution of child pornography by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Pennsylvania State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Handerhan was identified by investigators and a search warrant was executed at his residence. His computer was seized and an analysis of it conducted by the Pennsylvania State Police identified 147,070 images and 1,252 video files of child pornography.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the United States Attorneys' Offices and the Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims.
