9/27/2012: North Carolina Registered Sex Offender Amber Alert Case Update: An a
ffidavit released by the FBI states a 12-year-old North Carolina girl who was the subject of a multi-state Amber Alert was planning to marry her abductor.
The FBI reported the girl and 38-year-old Timothy Newman, a registered sex offender, were stopped Wednesday evening in Hallandale Beach.
According to an affidavit, after investigators arrested Newman, he told investigators that it all started when the girl's father had discovered Newman messaging his daughter.
Newman was then arrested for violating his parole. The affidavit states after Newman was released from jail, he made contact with the girl and planned to run away with her and get married.
The search for the girl started on Sept. 24 when the Carteret County Sheriff's Office received information from the girl's father that his daughter was missing.
The father told investigators he believed his daughter was with Newman, who he described as a family friend.
On Wednesday, authorities say Newman used a debit card in Coral Gables, Fla. which then prompted an Amber Alert for South Florida. Later that evening, an affidavit states that local law enforcement in Florida spotted the suspect's vehicle on Interstate 95 heading towards Hallandale Beach Boulevard.
Authorities say when they conducted a traffic stop on the car, officers were able to identify both Newman and the missing 12-year-old girl.
According to an affidavit, the girl said she has known Newman since June 2012 and communicated with Newman through text messages, phone calls and personal visits. The girl told investigators that when she met Newman, he told her he was 37 years old and was a sex offender.
The girl told authorities she and Newman began a sexual relationship with each other at the end of July. The affidavit states in September, she and Newman decided to run away together and planned their escape through text messages and other forms of communication.
Investigators say Newman picked up the girl and then drove through South Carolina then to Florida. The girl said Newman threw away both their cell phones somewhere in South Carolina.
According to the girl, Newman told her he knew he was in trouble and that he would go back to prison for being with her.
