MISSING FOR 6 YEARS... Yasmin Acree Endangered Missing 1/15/08 Chicago IL http://www.missingkids.com/poster/NCMC/1088268 I ask that you please share Yasmin's story. Will you please share? One tip...that's all it takes. Thank You! Yasmin was last seen at her family's Chicago IL home on January 15, 2008. That day she went to the North Lawndale YMCA, where she was involved in sports and other activities. After she came home, she did a load of laundry and went to bed. She was gone by the next morning. There were indications of a break-in at their residence; two locks on an outside fence and a lock on the basement door had been cut. Yasmin's bedroom was in the basement. Her room appeared untouched and nothing was taken, not even Yasmin's eyeglasses. Yasmin was a freshman at Austin Polytech Academy at the time of her disappearance, and was about to start a new job. She has no history of runaway behavior. Her family has criticized the police investigation in her case, claiming investigators assumed she was a runaway and failed to look into other possible causes of her disappearance. Authorities admitted they made serious errors at the onset of the investigation by not immediately dusting for fingerprints and not taking the broken lock from the basement door. Yasmin, who was born in Kentucky, had a troubled past. Her mother, who is now deceased, was a drug addict. Yasmin, and her older brother, Demarcus, were removed from the home when they were toddlers. Yasmin spent several years in the Kentucky foster care system, where she was sexually abused and developed severe emotional and behavioral problems. In 2001, Yasmin and Demarcus went to live with Rose Mae Starnes, their aunt by marriage, and she adopted them in 2006. Starnes stated she loved Yasmin but had trouble dealing with her behavior problems, and occasionally disciplined her by whipping her with a belt or locking her in the basement. In 2007, when Demarcus was 16, Starnes asked him to leave her home. Yasmin was the only child living at the residence at the time of her disappearance. She had been an excellent student in middle school, but when she started high school she got poor grades. Jimmie Terrell Smith and his father lived in the second-floor apartment in Yasmin's building at the time of her disappearance. His father was friends with Starnes. Smith moved into the building in 2005, after he was paroled from prison where he had been serving a sentence for attempted murder. Following his release he was arrested six times and he admits he was always armed and sold drugs near Yasmin's apartment. He reportedly took an interest in Yasmin, and she mentioned him twice in her diary. Starnes didn't tell the police that Smith was living in her building until 2009, when he was arrested for raping five females, including two 14-year-old girls he allegedly kidnapped. In a press interview from jail, Smith said he knew what happened to Yasmin and he was responsible for four murders he hadn't been charged with. This information hasn't been confirmed. Yasmin's case remains unsolved and foul play is suspected. UPDATE!!!!! TUSON POLICE SEEK NEW INFORMATION ON ABDUCTION (January 15, 2014) Dozens of police officers knocked on doors in a Tucson neighborhood Wednesday in hopes of finding new information in an investigation of a 6-year-old girl who was abducted more than 18 months ago. The door-to-door effort by about 50 officers in Isabel Mercedes Celis' neighborhood wasn't prompted by new leads. Instead, it was intended to seek out information that might not have been revealed when investigators first flooded the area after the child's April 2012 disappearance, police spokesman Sgt. Pete Dugan said. "It's a reconnect to see if there is anything new out there," Dugan said. Authorities have been searching for the girl since her father reported her missing. Family members have said they last saw her in her bedroom the night before. A window was later found open with the screen pushed aside. A neighbor said she heard her dogs barking and male voices outside her bedroom window around 6:30 a.m. on the day the girl was reported missing. The neighbor said there were no sounds that indicated a struggle. The girl's mother, Rebecca Celis, said she was pleased that police were still investigating her daughter's disappearance. "We are happy they are trying to get new eyes on the case," the mother said. Police have declined to say whether they have a suspect in the case or whether the child is believed to still be alive. No arrests have been made. They believe the girl was abducted but haven't concluded whether it was done by a stranger or someone known to the family. Still, police say whoever is responsible for the abduction had knowledge of the home's layout. About a month after the child's disappearance, police revealed that her father, Sergio Celis, had been barred from having contact with the girl's two older brothers, but they did not say why. Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Widmer said he didn't know whether Celis' father is still forbidden from having contact with his sons. The state's child welfare agency declined to comment on the case. Sergio Celis didn't immediately return calls seeking comment late Wednesday afternoon. In the weeks after the disappearance, authorities had searched for the child in a 3-square-mile area around her home, including ponds, dry streambeds and empty houses. They also searched her house, but records of that search have been sealed by a judge. The latest police canvass of Celis' neighborhood began at midday Wednesday and will probably continue through Saturday. "This has been an investigation that has never stopped," Dugan said. http://www.azfamily.com/news/Tucson-police-seek-new-information-on-abduction-240368131.html http://www.missingkids.com/poster/NCMC/1193092

MISSING FOR 27 YEARS... Joseph Helt 1/16/87 Ellenville NY http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/h/helt_joseph.html I ask that you please share Joe's story. Will you please share? One tip...that's all it takes. Thank You! Joseph was last seen near Sam's Point ice caves in Ellenville NY on January 16, 1987. He and three friends, John LaForge, Wade Marks and Kelly Diaz, were staying at the Mount Cathalia Lodge when they decided to go for a late-night drive in LaForge's Subaru. Joseph was driving when their car got stuck in the snow at approximately 3:30 a.m. The four young men were unable to push the car out and Joseph left the car and went to get help at the village five miles downhill. Diaz and Marks also abandoned the car a short time later, then LaForge left as well, separately from the others. The three other boys made it to safety, but Joseph has never been heard from again. The others assumed he had gone home and didn't realize he was missing until the next day, when LaForge went back to retrieve his car. An extensive search turned up no sign of Joseph. The inclement weather seriously hampered the search efforts; there was a great deal of snow and high winds, and most of the roads on the mountain were impassible. At the time of his disappearance, Joseph worked alongside his mother at the Auction Barn in Napanoch NY. He was interested in rock music, particularly the band KISS. Both of his parents have died in the years since his disappearance, but his aunt and his friends hope he may yet be located. Thinking of Vikki Vukelich on her birthday... http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/v/vukelich_vikki.html I ask that you please share Vikki's story. Will you please share? One tip...that's all it takes. Thank You! Vikki's husband, David Vukelich, says he last saw her on February 23, 1991 in their home in the 500 block of Tulip Drive in Glenwood IL. David stated he and Vikki argued about going to a party the night of her disappearance. He went to bed and she slept on the couch. When David woke up the following morning, there was an empty glass of wine in the living room and Vikki was gone. $8,000 was also missing from the home, but Vikki left behind her clothes, her shoes, her eyeglasses, and her two daughters. David and Vikki married in 1986. They had a troubled relationship and the police had been called to their house several times and arrested both of them due to domestic disputes. All the charges were dismissed each time. Shortly before her disappearance, Vikki told her friends she was going to divorce David. She had filed for divorce twice previously, in 1988 and 1989, but never went through with the whole process. She said she dropped the divorce suits because she was not sure she could support herself financially, without David's help, but she took a second job shortly before her disappearance and told her friends she was "really going to do it this time." David did not report his wife missing; a friend of Vikki's filed a report on February 28th. Neighbors stated that shortly after Vikki vanished, David did cement work in his driveway and garage and removed carpeting from the home. He told Vikki's older daughter not to go in the basement. Two months after his wife's disappearance, David filed for divorce. During the proceedings, he testified that Vikki frequently left him without warning for periods of time and would then return with no explanation as to where she had been. The couple's divorce was finalized in August 1991. David remarried in 1994, but his second wife died, apparently of breast cancer, a short time later. He remarried again in 2002. He moved out of his and Vikki's home seven months after her disappearance and now lives in Dyer IN. In 2003, authorities searched the house the Vukeliches lived in when Vikki vanished. They also exhumed David's second wife's body to look for signs of foul play. It is not known what, if any, evidence was discovered, as a result of these efforts. Vikki's older daughter was interviewed by investigators and media at that time and stated that while her mother occasionally left the family home for short periods after fighting with David, she always kept in contact with her children. Although David is considered the prime suspect in Vikki's disappearance, he has never been charged in connection with it. Vikki's case remains unsolved. She owned a beauty parlor in South Holland IL in 1991. Who Was James? Written by Rosemary Norris, sister James was a beloved young man who in one way or another touched the lives of everyone he met. I’ve had many conversations about Jimmy over the years and people always say the same thing: he was unforgettable. After a story ran in the local newspaper about the identification of his remains I received numerous calls from people who just wanted to sh are a story with me about something they experienced with him. It surprised me that they remembered things in such detail. James had a charisma about him, a kind of magnetism that pulled people into his orbit. We never knew when he was going to pop in for a visit but when his car would pull up to the house, all of the kids in the neighborhood would come running to greet him. I always thought it was funny that even the neighborhood moms turned into flirty schoolgirls in his company. There really was never a dull moment when Jimmy was around. Like a lot of teenagers coming up in the 1960‘s Jimmy had his share of problems with authority. He was often frustrated with the conservatism of our town and as a teen he relished the attention he got when he rebelled against it. Though he was never arrested, he knew how to push buttons and enjoyed doing so. I can remember my mother getting angry with him now and again over some of the troubles he got into, but once he outgrew the worst of it, he brought her a lot of joy. James loved nature and animals; his Afghan hound, Casaelya, was his constant companion and he always had a cat or two. He seemed to enjoy and relate to the very different qualities of dogs and cats, the intense loyalty of dogs and the independence of cats. He enjoyed living close to the ocean, making time to take Casaelya for a romp on the beach on a regular basis. He also enjoyed hiking and found a lot of opportunities to do so, relishing the vast beauty of California. He was at his core a kind, gentle soul with a creative spirit and a brilliant mind. He was a poet, a dreamer, an artist, and a musician. He was generous and loyal, compassionate and loving. He was both teacher and student: he graduated from San Francisco State University with a bachelor’s degree and a lifetime teaching credential for adult education classes. He continued to take enrichment courses while teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at an adult school in San Francisco that was popular with immigrants seeking American citizenship. I have often wondered what James might have done with his life had he not been murdered in the woods of Dixie County in 1974. I’m always interested to hear what others think. I find it remarkable that I often hear the same two things: he probably would have been a professor and he would have been an author. Many people also feel that he would have continued to care deeply about social and environmental issues and become an activist of sorts. Whatever he may have made of his life it would have changed others’ lives as well - the butterfly effect - and we’ll never know what could have been.
