BOONE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The body of 71-year-old murder victim Jimmie Cooper was badly decomposed when deputies found it. The Boone County Sheriff says that could have delayed the case, but thanks to family members, he's already interviewing several people. And while they're not suspects yet, Sheriff Rodney Miller says that could quickly change.
In the meantime: neighbors like Casey Halsted are still trying to accept a crime they never expected.
“It's mind boggling a little bit,” Halsted said.
Cooper’s remains were found late Wednesday night inside his home just off Route 3. Casey says even though Cooper was elderly, he was a fighter.
“He's the type of man wouldn't stand back for nobody,” Halsted said. “He'd stand his ground.”
The Boone County Sheriff says sometime in the last week, someone forced their way inside Coopers home and killed him. He thinks Cooper was targeted.
“We don't think it's something that's random,” Sheriff Miller said. “We don't think it's something that people are going to go from home to home and continue the violence.”
Even for his deputies, cases like this are hard to swallow.
“You've got a 71 year old fellow that was living by himself just trying to live out his life as comfortable as possible,” Sheriff Miller said.
The Sheriff says Cooper was a veteran, and worked as a part time security guard up until he was killed. Neighbors tell WSAZ.com he had also been a minister, and he loved people.
“He was a good going person,” Halsted said. “He’d talk to anybody. Or help them.”
Now, Halsted and his family are left trying to make sense of a senseless crime and hoping the killer is brought to justice.
Sheriff Miller says Cooper’s car was found Thursday in Putnam County. His office is investigating how exactly it wound up there.

Michelle Warner, 31, was last seen Saturday night at her apartment complex in Houston where she lived with her estranged boyfriend, Mark Castellano, and son Cayden. She disappeared the same night Castellano took the boy more than eight hours away to be with relatives.
9/27/2012: Texas: Police in Houston are searching for clues to determine why a Houston mother disappeared this weekend after an argument with her ex-boyfriend, who then left town with their 3-year-old son.
Michelle Warner, 31, was last seen Saturday night at her apartment complex in Houston where she lived with her estranged boyfriend, Mark Castellano, and son Cayden. She disappeared the same night Castellano took the boy more than eight hours away to be with relatives.
Mark Castellano told authorities that he and Cayden headed to Odessa, Texas, Saturday after the argument and Warner stormed out of their apartment, which he rented, officials said.
Family members and friends say Warner's cellphone has been off since the weekend and that it is unlike her to disappear from her home without her car as her boyfriend described.
Stefanie Helton, who has been Warner's best friend for more than 20 years, said the relationship between Warner, who had been working as a paralegal, and Castellano has "never been a good situation."
She said the two met when the three of them were working together at home health-care service provider Quality Infusion Care.
Helton said the couple were "barely dating at the time" Warner became pregnant in 2008, and that Castellano had "psychotic spells."
"He had episodes, he tried suicide ...," she said. "He's done other crazy things. Nothing extra-violent; he's push her up against the wall, that type of thing. He's threatened her."
Helton said that a family member of Warner's told her that Castellano said that they'd gotten into argument Saturday, and that he got mad and threw a pet cat against a wall. The family member told Helton that Castellano said Warner then became irate and hit him, before leaving the apartment.
Helton said bleach stains leading from the bedroom, through the living room and out front door were found in the apartment, although Officer Danny Do of the Houston Police Department said that could not be verified.
When police visited the apartment, Do said, they did notice that Warner's computer's central processing unit was missing.
Officer Do said Castellano told police that he had taken the CPU of the computer so he could get some information from it.
Do said Castellano has been cooperative with police, and that they spoke with him this morning. "This is still a missing-person case; we don't have any other evidence at this time," Do said.
He added that the Houston Missing Persons Department has spoken with the Homicide Department about the case.
Eric Moore, the shop manager at Sugar Land PC in Houston where Castellano worked, said that as of last week, he was no longer employed there.
Texas EquuSearch, an organization dedicated to searching for missing people, has joined in the hunt for Warner.
Warner is 5-foot-6, weighs around 125 pounds and has blue eyes and dark-brown hair. She has a dolphin tattoo on the backside of her shoulder and small butterfly tattoo on one foot.
If you have any information, please call the Houston Police Department at (713) 731-5223 or Texas EquuSearch at (281) 309-9500.

A 79-year-old Ormond Beach Walmart employee known for helping shoppers find their vitamins, toothpaste and cosmetics vanished from her apartment late Monday night, sheriff's officials said.
When Rose Bruce's daughter-in-law arrived at the apartment she shares with the elderly woman, she knew something was amiss.
It was after 11 p.m. and the front door was unlocked and dinner was burning in the oven, both unusual occurrences for the septuagenarian described as careful, clear-headed and healthy. Bruce's car was gone, as well.
Now she may be in danger, Volusia County sheriff's officials said, because her disappearance is suspicious.
Monday night when Bruce's shift ended at the store at 10, she drove home to the nearby San Marco Apartments off Williamson Boulevard. According to a deputy's report, Bruce was supposed to return to the store at 11 p.m. to pick up Cathy Ryan, also a Walmart employee.
Before that however, Bruce put dinner in the oven — hamburgers and french fries, the report shows.
When 11 p.m. rolled around, Bruce was not outside the Walmart Supercenter at 1521 W. Granada Blvd., to pick up Ryan, deputies said. At that point, Ryan called her mother-in-law on her cellphone, but was greeted only by voicemail, deputies said.
Ryan decided to walk home and when she arrived at the pair's apartment, the door was unlocked and the residence was filled with smoke, the report shows. Ryan said Bruce would never leave the door unlocked.
