Unidentified Remains
Date Located: October 29, 1983
City Found: Medina, New York
County Found: Orleans County
Estimated Date of Death: 1980-1981
Cause of Death: Not Disclosed.
The partially mummified, partially skeletonized remains of this woman
were found off of South Gravel Road (Route 63) in the town of Shelby
(part of Medina, NY) on October 29, 1983 near the Gennessee County line.
The spot that her remains were recovered is part of the Iroquois
National Wildlife Refuge, a 4,000 acre wetland that is offten refered to
as the "Alabama Swamps" by locals. During the spring months, much of
the area is submerged in water due to the spring thaw; during the fall
months, the area is popular with local hunters. It also features several
trails, elevated trails for the wet months and overlooks that were
popular spots for both nature lovers and local youth.
The area
is somewhat isolated. Route 63 serves as a main route to get to the Lake
Ontario shore from the New York State Thruway. It is also frequently
used as a truck route by tractor trailers. At night though, the road can
become very deserted and there are no homes or buildings located on the
road for several miles in either direction. Also of note, passing
motorists would not consider it out of the ordinary to see a car pulled
off the side of the road because hunters, hikers, fishermen/woman would
frequently park on the road shoulder to enter the wildlife refuge.
There is however the Iroquois Job Corps., a residential career training
and education facility for young people between the ages of 16 and 24
located about 2 miles away.
