10/29/2012: Portland, Oregon: Investigators have identified the body of a girl
found in Washington Park on June 26 as a runaway from San Diego. Mark Beebout (right) is accused of killing two women in Portland, one whose body was found in a Belmont Street apartment and the other whose body was discovered in Washington Park. Portland police said she was visiting relatives in Vancouver when she was reported as a runaway June 15. She was also reported as a runaway in San Diego County prior to that.
Detectives distributed a sketch of Cruz to the public and authorities nationwide after her body was found, seeking help identifying her.
Beebout, a registered sex offender, was charged with killing her before she had been identified. He is also accused of killing Nikayla Powell. That woman's body was found in a southeast Portland apartment in July.
Police said Powell invited Beebout to stay with her after meeting him through a volunteer program that helps the homeless.
