POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. -- State Police are looking for a car that may be connected with a murder last week in Mason County.

Troopers from the Mason detachment have taken over the investigation into the killing of Rene Gonzalez, State Police announced Wednesday. Gonzalez, 43, was found shot to death on the porch of his home on W.Va. 2 in Gallipolis Ferry on July 11.

State Police Cpl. B.L. Keefer said Wednesday that troopers are looking for a dark-colored passenger car, possibly dark blue, with West Virginia license plates and tinted windows that was seen in the area on the day of the shooting. The car is believed to have oval-shaped headlights and a starter problem that creates a high-pitched grinding sound.

Keefer said the car was not a suspect vehicle, but a "vehicle of interest." State police think the people in the car may have seen something that may help with the murder investigation.

Anyone with information about the car, its occupants or the shooting is asked to call the Mason detachment of the State Police at 304-675-0850.

The results are in from the annual City Crime Rankings, a popular reference book that compares the crime levels of 354 U.S. cities.

Read about the annual City Crime Rankings, a reference guide full of fascinating facts including where your city ranks.

Six crime categories are considered among the cities -- all of which must have populations of 75,000 or more -- to establish the rankings. They include:

Murder
Rape
Robbery
Aggravated assault
Burglary
Auto theft
The research is compiled from the FBI's final 2003 crime statistics, which were released in October 2004. All cities with populations over 75,000 that submit crime data to the FBI are included.

Camden, New Jersey was ranked the most dangerous city in the United States.

Interestingly, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Morgan found a minor error in the results. Some 5,760 crimes were missing from the St. Louis police's 2003 data-an omission that would have moved St. Louis up to the third most dangerous U.S. city and bumped Atlanta down to fourth!

This most recent version of City Crime Rankings (the 11th edition) can be ordered from Amazon.com in paperback for $44.95 or hardcover for $99.95.

Many libraries also keep the annual City Crime Rankings on their shelves. It is an interesting resource for its many facts, including learning where your city (or nearest city) ranks and helping those considering a move to other regions.
