East Coast hikers missing in Glacier National Park

Rescue teams at Glacier Nati
onal Park in northwestern Montana on Sunday searched in wintery conditions and rugged terrain for two East Coast hikers reported missing by family members.

Park officials said 50 searchers are looking for 32-year-old Neal Peckens of Virginia and 32-year-old Jason Hiser of Maryland. Hometowns weren't available.

Weather is the biggest challenge facing searchers, who are finding 18 inches of snow on the trail at higher elevations and five-foot drifts in some areas, spokeswoman Denise Germann said.

"The area they are working in is very steep and exposed," she said. "It's right along the Continental Divide, and it's very windy."

More rain and possibly snow in higher areas is expected on Sunday, she said. A helicopter dropped off some searchers inside the park early Sunday but Germann said low clouds moved in, preventing aerial searches.

The two were reported missing Friday after failing to catch a flight home from Montana. Their vehicle was found late Friday, and the search started Saturday.

Germann said it's not clear if they were prepared for cold weather, or if they have much experience in the backcountry. Searchers believe the two were hiking and not mountain climbing.

"We believe they are still in the park," she said. "We don't know what clothing or gear they've got."

Officials believe the two started hiking from the North Shore Trailhead at Two Medicine on the east side of the park on Tuesday and planned to return to Two Medicine on Wednesday, and then do some day hikes Thursday.

She said park rangers along with Flathead County Search and Rescue members were taking part in the search. She said some are on foot, some on horses and some searching with dogs.

The National Weather Service predicts mostly cloudy skies with a 50 percent chance of rain on Sunday with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s, dropping to the upper 30s or low 40s overnight. Winds are from the southwest at 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 45 mph.

The mother of a teenage girl who has been missing since Saturday night has pleaded for help to find her daughter, fearing she may have gone somewhere with a man she met on the internet. The mother of a teenage girl who has been missing since Saturday night has plead
ed for help to find her daughter, fearing she may have gone somewhere with a man she met on the internet.

Michelle Darcey said her 15-year-old daughter Brooke Skybinsky had left her mobile phone at home, had not contacted any family or friends, had not touched her social media accounts and had no money.

She last saw her daughter when she went to bed at their Armadale home on Saturday night after a fun night with family friends.

"She was gone by the morning," she said. Ms Darcey said her daughter had never run away before and she had no indication anything was wrong.

She had since been told by some of her daughter's friends that they thought her daughter might have been picked up that night by a man called Rodney who she met on Facebook.

She said she hoped that was not true.

"I'm trying hard not to listen to those stories, police are investigating everything," she said. "We've never heard of a Rodney - Brooke is not a silly girl, she knows not to do that."

She said her daughter had a 17-year-old boyfriend but police told her the 15-year-old was not at his house.

Ms Darcey said she was unsure what clothes her daughter was wearing but knew she had her iPod with her.

"Anything would help at this point; we've exhausted all our avenues for trying to find her," Ms Darcey said. "I'm at a loss and her best friend is worried about her as well."

She does not believe her daughter ran away because the family's elderly dog has to be put down and her daughter had wanted to be with him at the vet.

She urged anyone with information to call her or police and pleaded with her daughter to call if she was safe.
"I'm very worried, I miss her and I just want her to come home," she said.

BAY VILLAGE - Author James Renner, who wrote a 2006 book about the murder of Amy Mihaljevic, is raising money to produce a feature film based on the search for her killer.

BAY VILLAGE - Author James Renner, who wrote a 2006 book about the murder of Amy Mihaljevic, is raising money to produce a feature film based on the search for her killer.
Renner recently launched his fundraising effort and hopes to raise at least $35,000.
Amy Mihaljevic, 10, was abducted Oct. 27, 1989 from a shopping center on Wolf Road in Bay Village. Her body was found in February 1990 in a field in rural Ashland County. No one has been charged with her murder.
Renner’s 2006 book, “Amy: My Search for Her Killer,” looked at the case, including clues and suspects.
Working in the film industry before becoming a journalist, Renner now wants to turn Amy’s story into a feature-length film in an effort to spread the word about the case and uncover new clues. He wants to begin filming in February using a local crew.
“My goal is to make the best film possible and, hopefully, get it into national theaters,” he said.
The film will explore the search by local police and the FBI for Amy’s killer. However, Renner said he would not name suspects in the film or try to sway audience opinion.
“It’s just that the search for her killer is so bizarre because you come across the strangest characters,” he said.
Renner said he was surprised to learn how many men were close to Amy.
“There are at least 25 men who had the means, motive and opportunity to commit this crime,” he said. “I don’t know of any other case like this where you have so many suspects.”
He said he hopes his film could help bring the killer to justice.
“Somebody out there has that piece that everybody is missing and they’re not aware of how important that little bit of information is,” he said. “The more widespread we make Amy’s story, the better the chance we will find that person with that last little clue that will crack the case.”
His previous work in film included adapting a Stephen King story starring Harvey Pekar and Michael Stanley, which premiered at the 2005 Montreal Film Festival.
Renner is raising money for his new project at indiegogo.com/amy-movie.
Donations can be made through PayPal or by credit card for amounts of as little as $10. Each donation will earn a special thanks in the film credits. Larger gifts include perks such as tickets to the premiere and film photo albums.
If not enough money is raised, contributions will be refunded, Renner said, adding that he has agreed not to pay himself a director’s fee for working on the movie. Instead, he said, contributions will go toward production expenses.
